Wicked in Manila

February 20, 2014

Musicals in my opinion, are some of the best works of art. I have loved them ever since I was a kid. Getting to see them being performed live is always a dream. I was lucky enough to have watched two of them while touring in the US with Songspell way back in 2006. I was able to see Chicago and Phantom of the Opera. Both blew me away. Knowing the artistry and craftsmanship needed to create such plays, and seeing them live are just mind-blowing. So, when I heard that Wicked was coming to Manila, I knew I just had to experience it.

I was very lucky the stars seemed to have been aligned for it to happen as well. I already had a ticket to Manila which coincided with the play dates, and a credit card company offered a very good promo for the tickets. By October of last year, Fonzi and I had purchased our show tickets, picking ‘rock star seats’ as he called them.Β When finally our date came, I couldn’t help but feel excited and at the same time nervous! I couldn’t explain why I felt nervous, so let’s just leave it at that. The company performing was an Australian Theater Company, and they’ve already brought the show to other Asian countries as well. The two Witches of Oz were played by Jemma Rix (Elphaba) and Suzie Mathers (Glinda the Good).

Prior to watching the play, I had not read the book from where it was based, so I had no idea what the story was going to be like. Basically, I just knew some of the songs from the play out of familiarity. This was why I was excited. It was really something new to me, and of course I had great expectations. We got to the auditorium and to my surprise, our seats were right smack in the front row. We only missed dead center by a few seats. They were that good! I could literally see the goings-on in the orchestra pit, and the actors were just a stone’s throw away. Since photos weren’t allowed during the performance, we gladly took some shots before the show began. Just look at the set-up!

Rappler.ph said that this production was an exact replica of the one in Broadway, from the costumes to the make-up to the set. They also said the show was so great it would not disappoint. And they were right! I had the most amazing experience watching the show, I was glued to my seat the entire time. All I could say was wow. The story, the songs and the performers were all so amazing.

I heard from the grapevine that the turn-out for Wicked will be the basis for bringing Miss Saigon to Manila. Now, that’s another thing to watch out for. If you haven’t seen Wicked yet and you’re just in Manila, please do so! You will not regret it!
